My Story – Mr. Jezeel Martin

Dear UWI Toronto Gala Supporters:

In the past I was very fortunate to have received assistance from you towards my tuition payment at a time when I was flat on my face and having been faced with a threat of de-registration at the UWI. Your scholarship assistance contributed to me being able to complete my law degree studies at the University of the West Indies, Mona.

Since then, I advanced to Norman Manley Law School (the “law school”) where I have recently entered into my final year (of 2) to write the final set of Bar exams required for me to obtain my Legal Education Certificate (LEC) so that I can be called to the Bar as an Attorney-at-Law in 2017.

During my first year of studies at the law school, I worked very hard to ensure that I was in a position to pay my required tuition. As a result, I enrolled in the evening stream of students so that I could attend classes in the evening and work during the day throughout law school to meet my tuition deadlines. Thankfully, I was able to raise sufficient funds from the fruits of my labour

and met all tuition deadlines set by the law school, paying off the full, $850,000.00. in January this year (2016).

In January, having won the internal law school competition, I was selected along with two other law students who formed the law school's team to represent the law school in a regional law school competition that was staged in Trinidad. Thankfully, we returned to Jamaica with the champion's shield.

Since then I still continued to work up until April when I needed to write my first year Bar exams. I am happy to report that I was successful in all. Thereafter, I did 10 weeks of internship that was offered to me by Nunes, Scholefield, DeLeon & Co in order to fulfill the laws school's requirement in order to be called to the Bar next year. After completing my time at Nunes, I went to Myers, Fletcher & Gordon for a similar experience.

Two weeks ago I cleared the first-half of my tuition for the final year and last week I commenced the first few weeks of my FINAL year of law school!

I am looking forward to a great final year.

I will update you as I go along.

Best regards,

Jezeel Martin
